Hey, if anyone is still in this thread:

What do you think when you compare 3.5 to 4e?
The big difference with minis should only be used when supported by something else ( ie. I hate the minis because the constant reference to them makes me feel like I'm not playing and rpg)

Okay, no one posted so I will because I can't sleep.

I think that 3.5 is the "better" overall system, but it can be pointlessly complex and mind boggling. You need to plan a character out and then build according to a plan, which I don't like. Also the one hundred billion prestige classes seem to be pointless to me, many become simple variations of one another.

For ease of use I think that 4e is better. The game uses one fundamental system for character creation. There is no Fighter build version, Arcane build style, Divine build style, and skill monkey build style. This I really like. I also like the "points of light" idea, not always mind you. The idea creates a world that is very much like most fantasy worlds, some spots of civilization and mostly wilds. This is also very much like the ancient civilizations.

I've yet to play DnD but my friend said you could poke an enemy to death in 3.5. True or False?

True, but only if your character is a pixie. Seriously, my current campaign has a swashbuckling pixie and she is the most bad ass killing machine in the party.

There a few instant kill effects at high level. Cast spell, you make a save, fail? (yes), cool you die!

Overall no, but it depends a lot on the DM and the characters.

Btw: thats me. That was my first character, which was odd.

You can enchant a war forge's hands to make them have flaming hands, thus doing more damage when you poke. Still, it depends on the DM whether or not he'll let you get away with poking or if you have to actually slap him. Lame.

The prestige classes thing i bet will happen eventually in 4e, it just needs to be out as long as 3.5e. One thing I really like about 4e is the point buying system for making battles.

There are no prestige classes in 4e, paragon paths yes. But the paragons are only extensions of the base class, they aren't like the prestige class where you need to plan out your characterfor 15 levels before you begin to play.

I like 4e combat better. I think that the mechanics are much cleaner. Yes, it can be irritating that to heal someone as a cleric you need to smack a ho with your mace, but overall the combat is much better in the 4e system than in 3.5.

Also the roles are much less blended. 3.5 has a front line guy, a wizard guy, a skill guy, and a divine guy. 4.0 has Defender, Striker, Leader and Controller. This helps figure out what a party needs very quickly.

The focus for the systems is different. In 3.5 you could make one optimized character and be better than the party on your own. In 4e the party is stronger than the sum of it's parts. Here teamwork and tactics rule. The party must balance it's roles of defender, leader, controller and striker.
